Combating Mosquitoes

Combating Mosquitoes

Generally high-rise apartments should have less mosquitoes. I am not sure how the mosquitoes can fly so high up into my apartment. My immediate suspicion was that one of the neighbors was breeding them.

During raining days, our body temperature is higher than the ambient temperature and attracts mosquitoes into the bedroom when the windows are opened. The mosquitoes are also attracted to the body odour emitted from sweat and breath.

I do not think I will ever find the breeding ground. The only way is to repel them or trap them. I have been doing some research on the 2 ways. I want a natural and cost-effective method to reduce the likelihood of being bitten by mosquitoes in the house.

Mosquitoes like dark places and usually hides in the day. We can spray repellents into dark corners of the bedroom, behind and under the bedframe. The toilet in the bedroom is an also an ideal hiding spot for the mosquitoes. I am also concerned about the chemicals used in insect repellents would affect our health. I looked for natural alternatives and here is one recipe I found.

1 Tbsp of cinnamon oil
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
1 Tbsp witch hazel or vodka
Fill the rest with purified water (1 1/2 Cups)

I also looked up electronic mosquito traps to help catch the mosquitoes. The good ones were generally above $80 which simulate human odour and emit heat to lure them in. I am not sure if the investment is worth it since the mosquitoes only happen once in a while. I found a DIY mosquito trap which worth a try and probably be a fun project with my little girl.
